Help Your Baby Fight Colds

It’s been a while since I’ve had a cold… due, in part,

to all the clean living I’ve been doing. In fact, I can’t

pinpoint exactly when it was that I had my last cold,
or flu. It had to be before I started my rigorous plan
to lose all my flubber and stopped buying XXLTommy
Bahama shirts at Beams and Struts.

I can tell you that the last thing a surgeon wants in the

operating room is a cold. Just imagine trying to get the
exact placement for somebody’s new hip with your nose
   running like an open faucet.

Pediatrics magazine has just published a study that
says moms-to-be can reduce the risk for their little
ones getting sick by taking fish oil supplements. Add
that to the list of growing benefits for taking fish oil on
a regular basis.

In the study, researchers at Emory University report
that women taking 400 mg of DHA, an omega-3 fatty
acid found in fish oil, helped their newborns to fight off
cold symptoms, such as coughing, nasal congestion
and runny noses. The cold fighting effects lasted for
about six months.

Researchers at the University of Connecticut School
of Nursing have found that fish oil may also prevent
symptoms of post partum depression. The research
team found that women, who took fish oil supplements
during their pregnancy, had fewer signs of post partum
depression than women who did not.

One of the theories about post partum depression is
that omega-3 fatty acids are shunted from the mother
to the fetus, during the third trimester, which is good
for the fetus, but leaves the mother with a deficit.

One of the reasons for the study was that fish oil has
been shown to improve depression symptoms, in general,
even among women who aren’t pregnant. In the trial,
researchers used 200 mg of DHA daily, which was
thought to be double the amount most women got
normally (50-100 mg, without supplementation).

This study is going to be expanded on a much larger
scale. Research has already shown that omega-3 fatty
acids can enhance the signals that nerve cells use to
communicate in brain networks.

So put down that Snickers bar and get some of my
Powerhouse Omega Formula. It doesn’t taste as good
as a Snickers bar, but it has literally hundreds of benefits,
whereas a Snickers bar only has one.

I’ll be back tomorrow with more.

With my best wishes for your optimum health,

Dr. Bill
