Over the weekend, 22 members of Seal Team 6, the
guys who took out Osama Bin Lasen, were killed, when
their helicopter crashed in a battle with the Taliban. This
is not to make light of the others aboard, both American
and Afghani. But this should remind us that war is not a
board game, where you move pieces around at will, to
fit into your own world view.
In war, even leaving the battlefield has a cost. Make
no mistake about it, the Taliban are butchers and no
amount of sympathetic press stories is going to make
them look any different five years from now. For going
on four decades, we have heard about the poor Palestinians,
who continue to launch rockets, grenades and use IED’s,
like they were toys for every child to play with.
To lose 22 of our best and brightest is shocking, even
for the cynical in Washington. I have to wonder if Harry
Reid (who was in such a rush to see his pomengranite
trees in bloom), will extend his condolences. Will the
Commander in Chief call each and every family personally,
as his predecessor did? Will Obama now take another look
at how exposed these heroes were during this drawdown?
Probably not.
He is a man who wanted to be President, but still has no
idea of what being President means. During the deficit
debacle, he only worried that "it" could mean to his presidency.
When he was running for President, we were told that he
voted "absent" 129 times. And guess where he’s been,
when the going’s gotten tough?
Absent.
Unless he needs campaign contributions from the rich
and famous. Unless there’s a chance for a good foursome
at one of the great golf courses. Unless there’s a real big
hullabaloo of a birthday party and Oprah’s coming.
So here we are, with the economy stalled and faltering,
and he says ,"Jobs are our number one priority."
Is he deaf in one ear…and can’t hear out of the other?
And if your neighbor is angry, and joined the Tea Party,
and had the "audacity" to voice his view about what
he "hoped" for…well…he’s a "terrorist." Or a "mugger," or
a "knife wielding thug."
I say we start dropping all these semi-intellectual pundits
into Afghanistan. We can put Maureen Dowd in charge,
with "Tingle" Matthews, and "Firestorm" Fineman. Strap them
all up with 80 pounds of gear and turn them loose on the
Taliban, or have them hunt down that little creep in Yemen.
They could have meetings in the middle of the desert, trying
to agree on whether the people shooting at them were
terrorists, or not (or muggers…or thugs with a knife).
One thing’s for sure…we don’t want them protecting us.
We want real men…like the men of Seal Team Six…who
answered the call…without sounding like the ladies who
lunch.
